If you have a minute, please
watch the following video clip
received from PDG Jim
Wilson. It is a beautiful story
of Johnny, the grocery store
bagger. It is very short, but it
will remind you of why and
how we make an impact in
what we do. Membership
growth? This is how!

Waves of Destiny
This is a story of destiny,
of an unexpected love between
a young Iranian Air Force officer
and a charming young English
woman. It is a story of faith in
God, of a life cast among the
rippling currents of hope and
despair during a period of
national and international upheaval.
This is the story of Lion
Houshang Filsouf
and the
waves of destiny that taught
him to believe in miracles.

Lion Coby Perkins provides this update on the Rose Sale
Preliminary numbers are really fantastic! Thanks to a hard working bunch of Lions, we delivered approximately 300 dozen on Thursday, and approximately 300 dozen on Friday - with 200 dozen to go out on Saturday!!! If you're signed up to work on Saturday, we'll probably get started at 8:15 - 8:30 at the fairgrounds (we have to pick up 200 dozen roses and 100 more vases when the florist opens at 8:00). 800 dozen amounts to $16,000 in sales! We had to stop taking orders sometime Thursday - good problem to have. Every rose has it's thorn so they say, and this type of project has its share of problems with manpower, deliveries, etc. but this year it's been a great success on the whole. We'll get some final numbers on sales, income, and expenses as soon as everything's turned in. Again, thanks for everyone's efforts from sales to assembly and delivery!

Downtown Lions Club,
I apologize for just now getting around to telling you, Glen and the Downtown Lions Club how much I appreciate your help with the Amarillo Relays. Your Club is a lifesaver. Every year it is a major task in attaining enough community volunteers to successfully run off the Relays. For the 2nd year in a row you have come through in making the 2008 Amarillo Relays a huge success. The coaches from the surrounding towns made many outstanding comments concerning the Lions Club and the professional job all of you did in running off your event.
I am in hopes that we can continue this partnership for the 2009 Amarillo Relays, but I can sure understand if you need to focus your attention to other areas in the community.
Sincerely,
Alan Hunnicutt
Amarillo ISD Athletic Department

Mayor Debra McCartt follows our club activities very closely and often reads about us on this website. She recently wrote us a note concerning our efforts in the High Plains Eyeglass Program.
Sid, it looks like the Lions are doing such wonderful work! I am so very proud of all of you! I am really going to try and make a Tuesday meeting. That is our commission day, but sometimes it can work for me.
Thank you all for making a difference for so many!!
Debra McCartt

Lion John Michie reports that the Lions High Plains Eye Glass Program has approved 301 students so far, in the Amarillo area, to recieve eye glasses that their parents can't afford. Look here to see a sample of the good you are doing. Lion John is the president of the High Plains Eyeglass Program.

Lion Rocky Popejoy reported a successful community service project for our club at the Amarillo Relays. He says, "Before I dropped my camera these were all the photos I was able to take. There were more Lions Sat morning than needed. We were dismissed until 1:00. I am sure to miss someone but those working were, Doug Burton, Jim Colwell, Max Faulkner, Don Hollingsworth, Ron Kordas, John Michie, Cody Perkins, Kent Riley, Glenn Runion, Bill Snyder, Jamie Vandivere, Scott Verner, and Ray and Zoie White. It was a great 2 days of watching athletes in action." Many thanks to Lion Rocky for his hard work on this great service project.

RAISING MONEY for Lions projects never tasted so good!!! Lion Ryan Hodge fired up the Bar-B-Que smoker Saturday, March 15, and our club earned well over $500 cooking up 25 mouth-watering beef briskets, 18 racks of ribs, 4 chickens, and loads of sausage. Pictures Funds raised will be earmarked for support of the Youth Exchange Camp in Ceta Canyon this summer.

Lion Jim Colwell has put together the elements necessary for the club to produce a car show next September. Lion Jim will be asking several members to chair different aspects of this new project.

Emily Brister, former Queen of the Amarillo Downtown Lions, set a new all-time high scroring record for the WTAMU Buffalo ladies basketball team Wednesday night, Feb. 27. Downtown Lions attending the game were Lions Larry Orman, Stu Downing, Don Weeks, Jack King, Rocky Popejoy, Ryan Hodge, Sid Hooper, Ron Kordas, and Glen Runion. Emily scored 25 points in the game, leading the Buffalo ladies to a 60 to 58 victory over Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian. The WT junior has now scored 1,993 career points.

Miss Marissa Parker, a senior at Palo Duro High School, has been selected by a vote of the club to participate in the Lions Youth Exchange program. Miss Parker will receive a one-month tour of a foreign country, courtesy of the Amarillo Downtown Lions. During her tour, she will be a guest in the home of a Lions family. This is an exceptional program chaired by 1st VP Lion Ryan Hodge. Miss Parker was selected during the Feb. 26 regular meeting in a speech competition with four other outstanding Palo Duro HS youths.

The Amarillo Dillas General Manager Mark Lee announced Tuesday February 18, that baseball fans can receive two (2) free admissions to any Dillas' home baseball game in 2008 by bringing a pair of used eyeglasses to the game. Boss Lion Don anticipates that we will receive lots of recyclable eyeglasses through this strategic partnership.

Patrick

Sean
Lion Doug Burton is very proud of grandsons Sean (11 years old) and Patrick Crowley (8 years old). Lion Doug's daughter Kelly and son-in-law Chris have taught their boys to put back some of their allowance for giving to others. It's the boy's choice on who gets the money at the end of the year. Sean has attended one Lions meeting. Even though Sean didn't care for the birthday song, when asked who gets the money, they readily agreed it should go to Lions Camp. Sean and Patrick had accumulated $121.00! What a great thing for these young men to do.

Lion Brian Bailey has founded a new financial services firm, GRAHAMRichardson Financial Group. Congratulations, Lion Brian!

Lions Ryan Hodge and Gary Merriott ramrodded the Downtown Lions entry in the annual Make-a-Wish Chili Cook-off held Saturday, Jan 12, at the Rex Baxter Building on the fairgrounds. Others who worked included Boss Lion Don Weeks, Lion Janet Luman, Lion Paul Tubbs, and Lion Doug Burton. Lion Sid Hooper and wife Jeannie did not work, but took some pictures at the event and unofficially declare the Lions' chili to be the best ever served at the cook-off.

Past President Gary Merriott has received the progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship from Lions Clubs International. Lion Gary was designated to receive this prestigious award by our own Boss Lion in recognition of his outstanding service to our club and to our great association. This is the second time that Lion Gary has been honored in this way. Lion Gary's original Melvin Jones Fellowship was awarded by the Lions Eye Bank to honor his service on the Eye Bank Board of Directors. Congratulations Lion Gary. Your commitment to Lionism is an inspiration to us all.

Lion Jerry Yows was recently voted the Bus Driver of the year by his peers. Out of approximately 50 drivers, he was considered the best.

Lion Ricky Pheil The well-known radio personality and longtime Lions TailTwister is expanding his Christian ministry yet again. The CEO and founder of Kingdom Keys Network, Lion Ricky is celebrated within Lions for his good humor and his commitment to spreading the gospel of Jesus.
Most Downtown Lions know that, in April of this year, he started a church that meets at Wellington Square at I-40 and Georgia. Attendance has grown rapidly and now averages around 85. But Lion Ricky's enthusiasm for outreach recently told him he could do more.
In November, Lion Ricky started a prime time television program called "Kingdom Keys". Airing at 6:30 Saturdays on KAMR-TV Channel 4, the show is an interesting mix of on-the-street interviews, testimonies, and Lion Ricky's commentary. Prayer partners man phones during the program and listeners are invited to call.
Best wishes in these new ventures, Lion Ricky!
